East, Germany: HU's Woods transferring to Mount Union
July 27, 2012 - Zach Baker
Germany Woods, the best running back in the Ohio Athletic Conference last year, and the best back I have seen in eight years of covering Division III football, is leaving Heidelberg.
But he's not leaving the Ohio Athletic Conference.
The would-be junior, who ran for more than 1,400 yards and had 11 touchdowns in 2011 — a season in which HU went 8-2 and had a shot at the Division III playoffs until the final week — announced via Twitter that he's headed to Alliance.
"I am now part of the University of Mount Union, Raider Nation!" Woods declared on his account Wednesday.
His former coach, Heidelberg's Mike Hallett, who himself went to and played for Mount Union, confirmed Woods' departure from the program in a phone interview Friday afternoon.
"We wish him well," Hallett said.
Woods won't be able to suit up just yet. He has to wait a year before being allowed to play football for the Purple Raiders.
As for HU, the door opens for Galion graduate Cartel Brooks to be the team's No. 1 back.
While Woods was a workhorse in the Heidelberg backfield a year ago, carrying the ball 238 times and averaging six yards a rush, Brooks was almost as dynamic. He was handed the ball 83 times, going for 777 yards, an average of more than nine yards a carry. He also scored seven times.
"We're excited to get Cartel 25-30 carries a game," Hallett said.
Hallett also hinted others will be given opportunities.
"We have very exciting newcomers," he said.
