Fatter, wider, softer
August 13, 2012 - Rob Weaver
Now that the London Olympics -- officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad -- are over, we can begin looking forward to, and planning for, the next edition.
The next Summer Games actually are scheduled for winter -- Aug. 5-21, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro is during winter in the Southern Hemisphere, although Brazil’s tropical climate should be plenty warm.
Still, with the unpredictability of weather these days, the host nation should prepare as many indoor venues as possible. And in the spirit of expanding opportunities to the athletically-challenged, A-T sports writer Tony Maluso and I have developed a group of five events for those who look better in warm-up outfits than spandex. Call it the couch-potato pentathlon.
The events include darts, bowling, billiards and cornhole. After competing in those disciplines, the top three teams would vie for medals in a game of poker.
Some details remain to be worked out (steel-tip darts or plastic? Cricket or 301? Eight-ball, nine-ball or some other pocket game?) but there is plenty of time to decide actual play. The important thing is this brings the Olympic dream within reach of everyone whose parents didn’t start them on that path soon after they learned to walk.
And as a demonstration sport, I suggest rhythmic horseshoes.
