September 5, 2012 - Janet DelTurco
It has been over a year since I last blogged, and I thought the site had dropped me for poor performance! But now I am rejuvenated and making resolutions to write regularly and keep up with myself. It was a dreadful summer for gardening, and although the flowers survived for the most part, the vegetable garden did not do as well. I do have broccoli, in fact I just picked some for my supper, but that is from a second planting after the first set of plants bolted badly. Those yellow flowers are very pretty, but not what I want to see back there. The peppers are coming along as well now, and I have a lone horseradish plant. Tomatoes are pretty well over and ready for the compost pile in another week or so, and I am putting off the job of pulling out and chopping up the corn stalks. Two more days and my sister will arrive from England for two weeks, so I have to save some work for her! My front porch has turned into a tropical spot, one plant at a time, and it looks very colorful out there now. It started with the mandevilla which is several years old and goes out there in the summer time to climb the railings, and then this spring I bought the start of a fig tree. I was just curious to see how far it would grow, and wow! It has doubled in size, to about 18 inches and has 11 little figs. I don't look for them to grow any bigger than they are now, about the size of a walnut, but fun to watch. And this week I found a true bargain at Lowe's, tropical hibiscus for $2.50 each.....on sale and then 50%off. So two of them are blooming away. Of course the challenge will be this winter, if I can keep everything healthy, or at least alive, in the spare bedroom.
