Busy day at a gateway to downtown

May 14, 2013 - Rob Weaver
Properties across from each other on North Washington Street are due for extra attention Wednesday.

May 15 is Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the Tiffin Police and Fire All Patriots Memorial at North Washington and Water streets remembers local police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty, as well as the historical events of Sept. 11, 2001.

President Barack Obama also has asked that flags be flown at half-staff Wednesday.

Meanwhile, across the street, Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Services plans to stage a Cash Mob at Ralph's Joy or Living from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The monthly Cash Mobs are meant to encourage local residents to gather at a local business and spend a pre-determined amount of money, typically $20.

Don't worry about telling Ralph and Julie Smothers; they know about it. In fact, they plan specials for the day, including a buy-two-get-one-free offer on Scrubbies. Rewards customers are eligible for another bonus. Plus, sample wine and check out their new olive oil and balsamic vinegar refilling station.

On your way to or from the store, pause for a reverent moment at the All Patriots Memorial.
