Get help with taxes, health care enrollment
February 5, 2014 - Rob Weaver
Two developments involving your money and the federal government were announced at the Seneca County Community Council meeting this week. Both, by coincidence, involve spaces reserved at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library.
Unfortunately, it appears the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program won't offer help to low-income and senior filers this year. Typically, 500-600 people received help at the VITA sessions.
Fortunately, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is to offer free, individualized tax preparation for low- to moderate-income taxpayers — especially those 60 and older — 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Thursdays at Fostoria Public Library, 205 Perry St., Fostoria. Appointments are required; call (419) 937-2962 to make one. The Tax-Aide also is to be available 9:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at Bellevue Senior Center, 690 Flat Rock Road, Bellevue — call (419) 483-6600 to make an appointment — and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 10 at Clyde Senior center, 900 N. Woodland Ave., Clyde — call (419) 547-8052 for an appointment.
But Tiffin-Seneca Public Library will be the place to get help applying for health care coverage through the federal marketplace or the extension of Medicaid. A licensed navigator is to be at the library 1-6 p.m. Feb. 18, March 4 and March 18. It looks like all sessions will be one-on-one with the navigator. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call (419) 447-3751.
Remember, the enrollment period ends March 31 for subsidized private insurance, available to people who don't have coverage at work.
