A light idea
February 26, 2014 - Rob Weaver
I noticed something different on the way to work this morning; the traffic light at the intersection of Miami and Nelson streets was cycling red-green-yellow instead of blinking as usual at that time of day.
After entering the office, I learned the light is to cycle continuously instead of switching operation at different times of day. The change is coming after yet another collision at the crossing of Nelson and Miami, the west side's unofficial bypass.
Mayor Aaron Montz stated a sensor will be added to the traffic signal to allow the light to remain green for motorists on Miami until an approaching vehicle is detected on Nelson. That system is to be installed after the weather breaks. Assuming, of course, spring does arrive.
Pedestrians using the new sidewalk on the south side of the street should make mental note of this change, too.
