Letter of Complaint
April 17, 2014 - Al Stephenson
File this one under the heading - are you kidding me? Clemson University in South Carolina has received a letter of complaint about it's football program being too entangled with religion. The letter came from a group called Freedom From Religion Foundation and here's what the group's attorney had to say.
"While student-athletes can pray, conduct Bible studies and engage in religious activities, the coaching staff, as public employees, should not be doing that with the student-athletes." Apparently head coach Dabo Swinney has had the audacity to pray with his players. Excuse me if I sound a little sarcastic when I say "how dare he?" The "foundation" goes on to suggest that Swinney eliminate the position of team chaplain.
First of all I find it difficult to believe that there is a foundation devoted to freeing people from religion. Secondly, would the foundation be more at ease if Swinney went drinking with his players? There are some serious problems in the world of college athletics. I'm not so sure that too much religion is among them.
The view from my seat suggests that the foundation should go after the coach for promoting Bryl Creem as a little Dabo do ya! It seems as pertinent as complaining about teaching young people the values associated with religion.
