The College Town Players of the Week
January 16, 2009 - Zach Baker
A new weekly piece for this blog, where I select an athlete from Heidelberg and Tiffin University as the college player of the week, sort of a sidebar to College Town.
* For the Dragons, I'm taking women's basketball player Megan Fletcher. The senior guard is having an excellent season for the Dragons, averaging almost 14 points a game.
But Fletcher, who transferred in from Kentucky Wesleyan last year, is more than just stats. She brings an energy to the team, as well as an ability to carry it on her shoulders if need be.
In the Dragons' 1-point loss to Ferris State Thursday, Fletcher went off for 29 points, six steals and four rebounds.
She has the ability to do almost anything on the court, and proved it Thursday.
* Heidelberg's athlete of the week is indoor sprinter Judy Bataille. I'm a little late on this one, as Bataille was already named track athlete of the week by the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Bataille, who won the national indoor 55-meter title last season, started this season with a borderline-ridiculous performance at the Rev. Mike Hout Invitational at Capital this past weekend.
Bataille finisheed in the top three three times at the the event, including a second-place finish in the 60-meter run (7.71) which provisionally qualified her for the Division III national meet March 13-14 in Terre Haute, Ind.
She added a second-place finish in the 200 and a third-place mark as part of Heidelberg 4 x 200 squad.
Bataille has been named the OAC runner of the week five times in her career. I doubt she'll win this blog's award that many times -- LeBron James doesn't win NBA Player of the Week all the time. But barring injury, its easy to expect more big things from her.
