Berg women v. MUC
January 31, 2009 - Zach Baker
With 3:57 left in the half, Heidelberg trails, 39-18. I've seen Heidelberg play poorly before (last month against Baldwin-Wallace is the best example), but the Princes seem to be in slow motion out there today.
Mount Union's Tessa Pohovey has 11, but Heidelberg's losing because of self-inflicted wounds. They are getting destroyed on the offensive glass, and have already turned the ball over more than 10 times.
My feeling coming into this game was that Heidelberg could win as long as it avoided an early big deficit. The story for this season has been Heidelberg falling behind big early, making a comeback to get close, then running out of steam.
-At halftime, MUC leads HU, 40-28. Berg made a nice little run at the end of the half, punctuated by a Brittany Skolnicki jumper just before the halftime buzzer.
Stacey Richard leads HU with 11 points.
MUC's Chanel Simpson has eight boards.
-With 1709 left, Morgan Harrigan hammered a 3 from the right corner, cutting MUC's lead to 42-39. Harrigan is a game-changer, because when she gets hot, everything falls. She has made a trio of 3's in the last three minutes.
- Stacey Barker's right-wing 3 with 13:24 left has given Heidelberg a 48-47 lead. This was after the Raiders got their lead back up to eight.
This is a good sign. Usually, Berg has fought back but not completed a rally. Now, it leads, which should give the team more confidence.
-With 10:29 left, Berg trails 53-50, after a pair of free throws by Pohovey. Heidelberg SID Morgan Hawley informs me MUC is 12 of 12 at the foul line.
- Heidelberg trails, 63-54 with 6:49 left. Heidelberg seems to be tenatative at times on offense, and it's leading to miscues. The Princes have turned the ball over 17 times so far.
- Berg trails 67-62 with 3:15 left. Everytime you want to write them off, the Princes find another run in them. Skolnicki just drained another jumper, cutting the MUC advantage to 67-64 with 2:41 left.
-In other news, the Berg men are losing by about 20 in Alliance.
-MUC leads, 70-66 with 1:18 on the clock. Katie Crider hit a big-time 3 from the right corner moments ago.
Jenny Miller's short jumper cuts the deficit to 70-68. 46 seconds left, MUC with the ball. Another foul sends the Raiders to the two shot bonus. The way they shoot free throws, Berg better plan on a stop.
-A steal by Skolnicki, and an acrobatic layup by Richard tie the game with 25 seconds left. I expect MUC to force up front, look for a foul or dish outside.
-Amanda Rose hit a layup with just under 14 seconds left. Berg opted against a timeout. But Stacey Barker's ill-advised pass across the paint was picked by MUC's Stephanie Schwartz with two seconds left.
Two free throws and its over.
MUC 74-70 final.
