Michigan Tech women vs. TU
February 5, 2009 - Zach Baker
Talk about a challenge. Michigan Tech is 14-0 in the GLIAC.
-Kylene Spiegel is honored before the game for reaching the 1,00-point mark.
TU's defense looks good early on, but the Huskies are No. 8 in the nation for a reason, and the Dragons are struggling for good looks on offense. Katie Zimmerman's right-corner 3 gives Michigan Tech a 7-2 lead at the 14:25 mark of the first half.
- With 9:02 left in the half, the Huskies lead, 20-6. Three's by Tara Ferris and Alicia Schneider have created the deficit. But it's Michigan Tech's defense that is impressive. It has made the Dragons work for everything offensively, and most times TU has to settle for something outside.
The Dragons are getting only one look at the basket most of the time. Michigan Tech's Danae Danan has gotten a number of boards already.
- Tiffin is getting buried in a sea of Michigan Tech 3-pointers. Zimmerman is 5 of 6 from deep, and the Huskies are 8 of 9 from there. I don't care what type of defense you play. If a team is that hot, there's nothing that you can do. It's 37-18 with 3:23 left.
Michigan Tech leads, 40-20 at the break.
Michigan Tech leads, 48-29, with 14:55 left. The Huskies were 9 of 11 in the first half from 3-point range, and they are the best in the nation from out there. They came in shooting better than 42 percent (153 of 362).
-At the 9-minute mark, TU is essentially trading baskets with the Huskies. The Dragons really have played OK tonight. But they are trailing 57-40. It's just that Michigan Tech is a great team.
Zimmerman has tied a Huskies record with six treys.
- Megan Fletcher's 3 from the left wing knocks the deficit down to 59-46 with 7:42 left. That's enough for Huskies coach John Barnes to call a timeout.
-The TU run continued when Leanne Lucius hit a layup to cut the Huskies lead to 59-48. But a Danen three-point play moments later made it 62-48, and that's where we are with 4:46 left.
-Short jumper by Alexis Karel makes it 62-52. That's the closest its been in a long time. But time may be running out. We have moved under three minutes.
-TU's defense has been outstanding in the second half. It has outscored Michigan Tech 34-25, but trails 65-57 with 1:40 left. Probably too late, but it has been a gritty performance by the Dragons against DII's No. 8 team.
-TU just keeps coming. Three free throws by Mandy Jaeb have made it 67-60, and TU just forced a jump ball when it had the arrow.
So, TU has the ball with 56 seconds left.
Michigan Tech continues to be great from the foul line, and will get out of Tiffin with a win.
Final score, Michigan Tech 72, Tiffin 63
