Heidelberg men v. JCU

February 11, 2009 - Zach Baker

-With 16:01 left in the first quarter, Heidelberg has forged an 11-9 edge against first-place JCU. The Blue Streaks are  pressing the Heidelberg, and the Princes are having trouble getting the ball in. I wonder if JCU coach Mike Moran wants to tire out the Princes with the pace.

-At 13:24, it's 19-17 HU after a Jake Hessey trey.

JCU is moving quickly on offense, forcing Heidelberg to match the speed. It's forced the Princes into a few turnovers, but HU is hanging in there, trailing 23-21 with 11:16 left. Quick game.

JCU's press has been super-effective. Heidelberg is under durress when it tries to do anything offensively, and has been forced into a number of turnovers. With 6:16 left, Heidelberg trails 35-26.

-John Carroll keeps attacking, and its rotation is extreme, almost like a line change in hockey. Moran has his guys working like a machine. One of his better players tonight, Matt Crozier, just made a pair of free throws, and a pass overshot Quinten Aden. A layup followed. It's 42-32 with 4:12 left.

-Baldwin-Wallace's upset of Wilmington Saturday has made it interesting in regard to the final playoff spot. If Heidelberg loses tonight to JCU, the league's best team, and the Yellow Jackets defeat Otterbein, the league's worst, B-W and 'Berg will be tied (in record) for the final OAC tournament spot. Heidelberg's trump card is its two wins over B-W, which gives it the tiebreaker.

HU plays at Otterbein Saturday, but then has Capital and Muskingum at home. B-W finishes at John Carroll, at Muskingum and at home v. Marietta.

Basically, Muskingum will play a huge role in how it plays out.

-JCU leads, 53-43 at the half.

-Heidelberg turns it over on its first possession of the half, making 18 in the game. Travis Kinn already has a double-double, with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Heidelberg outboarded the Streaks 26-16 in the first half, but JCU's plus-10in the turnover battle negates that.

Maurice Haynes scored 10 points in the first half to lead JCU. Kinn just barrelled into the paint for a layup, cutting the deficit to 55-49 with 17:29 left.

-JCU's press is still giving Heidelberg problems, and JCU is still hitting shots, swelling its lead to 67-56 with 13:43 left.

-It's starting to look really bad for Heidelberg. JCU has been on an 8-0 run, and has upped its lead to 75-56 2ith 12:26 left. Alex Koltsov just converted a jumper. Heidelberg's offense has been sloppy all night, and it's finally allowed the Blue Streaks to pull away, probably for good.

-Mike Moran has probably never even dreamed of his press defense working this well.Heidelberg just turned the ball over for the 29th time, and John Carroll leads, 84-61 with 9:43 left. It's gotten ugly.

-Even leading by 21, JCU keeps the pressure on. Rudy Kirbus just connected on a pair of free throws. Kirbus has been very good, with 13 points. But everything is working here in the second half.

-Cory Timbs just slammed the basket'ball, so that's something, for Heidelberg. But it still trals 93-70 with 6:26 left.

-Heidelberg has already given up more points than it has all season. On some level, this has to be sweet for Moran. The last time he was on this floor, it was in the OAC tournament, and his team was run out of the gym, 104-74. His team also lost both regular season games against Heidelberg last year. Right now his team leads, 101-82. 1:07 left.

On a closer note, the Heidelberg women are in overtime at JCU, but trails 65-59.

Berg loses, 105-84.
