TU men v. Northwood

February 19, 2009 - Zach Baker

Tiffin beat Northwood in Michigan for its lone conference win.

-It's 7-0 TU after a 3 and jumper by Darryle Miller and a layup by Rafael Cuellar.

-Not sure who these guys are, but they're beating Northwood, 17-3 at the 14:19 mark. Brian Scott is confidently leading the Dragons from the point, and he has eight points. The Dragons defense has been outstanding, but the officials are letting the teams play, which fits TU's physical style.

Northwood is on an 8-2 run, highlighted by Chris Johnson, who has seven points. Dragons offense has cooled off, and the lead is down to 19-11 at the 9:58 mark of the first half.

-Fair to say Northwood's struggling from the floor, and the Dragons lead 24-14 at the 4:40 mark. Darryle Miller puts in a layup a moment later, and TU's lead is 26-14 with 4:00 left.

Dragons lead 28-21 at the break, after the T'Wolves finished on a 5-0 run.

-With 14:39 to go, The Dragons and Wolves are tied at 34. The officials have started calling fouls, and the result has a two-pronged negative effect on the Dragons. They have already committed six this half, and two of their better players -- Miller and Cuellar, have foul fouls each.

-It's 42-40 Northwood with 9:58 left. The Dragons are getting sloppy on offense, and it's disappointing. Mohammed Fall launched a 3, Scott threw a pass of Fall's head, and it's allowed Northwood to pull ahead. It doesn't help that Northwood is ahead in fouls, 9-2.

Dragons look tired. Scott hit another jumper, making it 44-42 NU. But the problem here is that when the Dragons have a chance to grab momentum, they over shoot and make mistakes. It's why they've struggled to keep games close, let alone win.

-It seems like it's happened six times tonight. Northwood misses a free throw, and gets the rebound. It just happened, and it turned what should have been a Mark Barnes free throw and miss into a three-point possession. Northwood leads, 55-52 with 4:15 to go.

A pair of 3-point plays in the last two minutes have burned the Dragons, and they trail, 61-57 with 1:17 left. Scott leads TU with 18 points.

Cuellar just missed a shot, but got the rebounds and threw it back in and was hacked. Free throw falls and we're back to a 1-point game.

Dragon just did a fantastic job on the last possession, focing a timeout. Eight seconds left on the shot clock. 23 in the game. Northwood ball.

Barnes got called for an over and back. Scott drove the ball and tried to pass it back, but  Northwood's Ali Barada stole it and took it to the other end as time expired.

61-60 Northwood wins.
