Carey-Berlin Hiland game updates
March 19, 2009 - Zach Baker
About five minutes to tip off. I am on the court, so I'm thrilled. Mike Genet is also here, to my left, so if he has any witty banter, I'll pass it along.
The key? Carey can't afford a scoring drought like it had against New Riegel. A six minute drought will likely mean more than a three-point difference.
Carey is in white uniforms with blue trim, blue numerals. Hiland is in black uniforms, red trim, white numerals.
Carey starts with Julie Hill, Brooke Distel, Courtney Holsinger, Healy Batton, Taelor Vaughn
Hiland has Katelyn Stuckey, Hilary Weaver, Karli Mast, Mykeila Mast, Jessica Stutzman.
- Each teams starts with jitters, as each team turns it over twice in the opening 1:40. No score.
Wentling opens with a 3, Weaver answers. 3-2 Carey, 5:25 left.
With 4:13 left and the game tied at 3, Hiland makes its first "four-in" switch. Batton makes a pair of free throws, then Hilary Weaver makes a 3. Carey turns it over on its next possession. 6-5 Hiland, 3:18 left in the first quarter.
A Distel free throw and we're tied again. Blue Devils look composed so far.
After Stutzman scores an and-one, Phil Vaughn calls time. It's 10-6 Hiland with a free throw coming. Stutzman makes it. 11-6, 2:27 left.
Stickback off an offensive rebound by McKenzie Miller makes it 15-6 with 1:34 left. Carey's last points were at the 3:10 mark.
Carey turns it over for the fourth time. Karrah Windau gets whistled for the team's fifth foul. Stutzman convertes two free throws, and it's 17-6 Hiland. 35 seconds left.
Carey went 3:10 without scoring, and Wentling's 3 was the only basket of the first quarter for the Blue Devils. 17-6 after one.
- With 3:35 left in the second quarter, Carey trails Highland, 27-17. The Hawks had the lead up to 15, but a 3 by Windau and a pair of free throws made it 10.
Noelle Yoder just hit another 3 for Hiland. 30-17, 2:46 left.
Carey's problem is that its getting good looks, but not hitting. The Hawks are getting looks and burying them, or going to the foul line. Two free throws by Karli Mast make it 34-17. Holsinger comes back with a 3, then Hiland turns the ball over.
Blue Devils are 5 of 20 from the field. Windau helps that by nailing a 3. 34-23 at the 1:00 mark. Yoder answers with a jumper.
-Stuckey gets a layup and one from Stuckey. Distel's 3 at the buzzer is off to the left. 39-23 Hiland at halftime.
The difference so far is in the shooting. Hawks made 12 of 26, Carey made 6 of 22. Hawks also have 4 offensive boards to Carey's 1.
-A Windau jumper cuts the Hawks' lead to 39-27 with 4:48 left in the third. Hawks get a couple of offensive boards, but don't convert on next possession. Carey needs to make a run now.
Carey's looks are good, but the shots still aren't falling. Holsinger scores a layup, then Hiland turns it over. Mike tells me Hiland is 0 of 7 from the floor. A Wentling basket makes it 39-31, but Karli Mast answers with a layup of her own.
Windau misses two foul shots. 41-31 BH with 2:55 left.
Yoder makes a layup, then Carey turns it over. Stuckey turns a Holsinger save attempt into a layup. Distel gets a bucket. 45-33 with 1:03 left. Carey can't afford to be trading baskets now.
Distel makes two free throws. 45-35 with 35 seconds remaining. Hiland hasn't shot well this quarter at all, but Carey hasn't been strong enough in its shooting to make the kind of impact in the score it needed.
Yoder's free throws give her 15 points, and put BH up, 49-35 with 10 secinds on the clock. Windau's floater at the buzzer gives her 13 points. Carey trails 49-37 heading to the fourth.
Carey pep band (which is really good, by the way) plays the Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" between quarters. Interesting selection, since that is the dominant color in the Hawks uniforms.
-With 6:55 to go, Hawks lead, 51-39. Carey just can't seem to get the deficit into single digits. Hawks are 18 of 20 from the foul line, and will shoot the rest of the way.
Weaver makes two free throws, and has nine points. 55-39 BH. 6:20 left.
Yoder has been fantastic. She buries another 3 from beyond the key, and Hiland has its biggest lead -- 18. Yoder leads all scores with 19. Make it 21 as she hits a layup and is fouled. Looks like this one's over. 4:34 left, and Carey trails, 60-40.
Carey hasn't hit a corner 3 all day. Jumpers from that area are "a staple" as Mike puts it. 61-40 BH.
Carey is 10 of 16 from the foul line, while Hiland is 22-24. That is a huge difference. Vaughn pulls his seniors in two shifts at around the 3-minute mark. They get a good ovation from the faithful.
Carey's Leah Ritter makes a layup, and with 1:18 left its 70-42 with a minute left. Even Hiland's reserves are tough. It's a reason the game has become so one-sided. The game ends at 73-42 Hiland, and sets up a rematch between Africentric and the Hawks for the state title.
