If middle relievers and utility players don't get their due, one can only imagine how assistant coaches must feel.
Many coaches try to rectify this by listing their assistants at the end of a great season.
As reporters, we usually smile and nod, knowing we will not put that information in our article's final version.
It's not that we don't know and appreciate how hard assistant coaches work. It's just that naming all of a coach's assistants can turn a tight column into a greeting card.
But Heidelberg baseball coach Matt Palm always mentions his assistants. So much so that when he was named the school's athletic director last spring, he called me a half hour after we had finished our interview."
"I forgot to mention my assistants," he said, noting he couldn't handle being a baseball coach and an AD without them.
When the conversation came up today, after Heidelberg had won a share of its third-straight OAC regular season title, Palm again thanked his assistants.
For the record, Palm's assistants are:
Chad Fitzgerald, a former pitcher (and a darn good one) at Seton Hill.
Matt Tallarico, who played baseball at Manchester College in Indiana.
Adam Piotrowicz, who played at Manchester College and Bethel College.
So for all the credit Palm gets, he wants to make sure those working under him get some too.
