TU-Findlay updates

September 3, 2009 - Zach Baker

At Frost-Kalnow Stadium.

First quarter

Tiffin receives the kickoff, takes the ball at its own 28. David Singleton starts at quarterback. On a third and five, Singleton finds a wide open Greg Raspberry for more than 35 yards to the Oilers 35.

But on the next play, Singleton is picked by UF's Bryon Rizzi.

Monterea Williams runs the ball effectively for the Oilers, but TU forces a punt at its 39. TU is forced to punt minutes later, and Boris Bede creates a fair catch at UF's 33. (7:48).

-Using runs and short passes, UF drives to TU's 38. (5:14).

Demetrius Trapps breaks a 24-yard run, breaking tackes to the TU 12. He's just a redshirt freshman, but he's pretty special.

Couple of good defensive plays sets up a third and 8 from the TU 10. Andrew Beam is sacked by Columbian grad Dan Reedy at the 22. It forces a 40-yard field goal by Cameron Stevens at the 3:00 mark.

Findlay 3, Tiffin 0.

First quarter ends with Dragons facing a third and three from midfield.

Second quarter

Singleton sacked, sets up a Bede punt. Findlay gets the ball at its 27.

Beam hits Chambers on a long pass to the TU 2. Williams goes in for the TD at 12:28.

Findlay 10, TU 0.

Dragons need to finish a drive, because Findlay is clicking on offense.

In a crucial third and 10 at the Dragons 30, Singleton throws a strike to Trey Williams for 15 yards. Big completion. Chris Ivory follows by barreling for 8 yards into UF territory. An incompletion sets up a third and two. (10:42).

Trey Williams makes another clutch catch to keep the chains moving. TU at the Oiler 33.

Third and six at the 30. Look for Trey. Sure enough, Singleton finds him for an 8 yard gain. Williams fumbles, but ref rules he was down.

Dragons need points here.

Williams makes a catch for six. Third and four.  Singleton lofts a beautiful touch pass to Greg Raspberry, who fights off good coverage to grab it. Touchdown. Bede's kick is blocked. Seen this before. Big score though. (8:30)

Findlay 10, Tiffin 6.

Findlay's driving, just converted a fourth and 1 at the Dragons 25. (2:49).

With 2:11 left, it's third and 8 from the 23. Watch for Chambers. Delay of game makes it third and 13.

Beam finds Chambers, who runs to the 18 and fumbles, but the Oilers retain possession. Here comes Stevens. 1:31 left with a field goal coming. Stevens converts from 35 yards.

Findlay 13, Tiffin 6. Interesting to see what Dave Walkosky does here with the offense.TU has three timeouts.

Singleton (who's played the whole first half) is sacked on first down. I'd assume TU goes conservative here.

Singleton finds Alvin McKnight on a screen, he breaks tackles and runs to the TU 49 for a first down. Good, hard running by McKnight. (:32)

Timeout, TU.

Singleton is sacked for the second time. TU calls timeout again (:26).

After an incompletion, TU runs out the clock.

Findlay 13, TU 6 at the half.

Halftime thoughts: Chambers is uncoverable. Six catches, 123 yards in the first half.

Despite what Walkosky said, I suspect Singleton is the Dragons QB. He's thrown for 146 yards and a TD. But the pick in the first quarter might be his most crucial one of the night.

Third quarter

After a trip on the kickoff, Findlay is pinned inside its 1. But a series of runs by Williams and Trapps not only gets the Oilers out of trouble, but moves them deep into TU territory.

Trapps runs 15 yards for a TD, capping a 99 1/2 yard drive. That could very well break the back of the Dragons defense. You can't  get away with giving up 99 yard drives too often

Findlay 20, TU 6 (11:54)

The Dragons drive inside Findlay territory, but Singleton makes a bad read and tries to throw a short pass to his left, but cornerback Anthony Fields picks it. Moments later, Chambers probably puts the game away by grabbing a screen and motoring 56 yards down the right side for a TD. Then, in the ultimate example of Murphy's Law, Findlay botches the extra point snap. Good for TU right? Well, no.

Holder Dustin Zielaskiiewicz granbs the ball and rolls right, gets a few good blocks, and finds his way into the end zone for 2. Just plain ugly for the Dragons right now.

Findlay 28, TU 6. (8:25)

On the ensuing drive, Singleton is sacked again on third down and coughs up the ball. UF recovers on TU's 39 (7:30).

Findlay's offensive line is pushing the Dragons around right now. Findlay doesn't need to pass the ball. Williams drives in from the 3,and Findlay is really poring it on now. (5:27)

Findlay 35, Tiffin 6.

With 2:42 left in the third, Trapps is down with an injury. Not sure what it is, but it's bad enough that the ambulance is out on the field. Trapps was having his second straight big game. Thoughts are with him right now.

It appears to be a left leg injury.

Third quarter ends with Findlay leading, 35-6.

Fourth quarter

And Findlay punts TU inside the 1. (14:40).

TU is picked off for the third time; this time its by Donte Johnson, but a 12 men on the field call allows the Dragons to keep possession.

Steve Feeman has entered the game at quarterback. (10:24).

With Feeman leading the drive, TU moves to the Findlay 9 with 8:51 left.  On fourth down, Walkosky goes for it. Feeman's pass is incomplete.

Nate Scully enters the game. TU moves the ball to the Findlay 15. Scully throws a loft pass to the left side of the end zone.Chris Bonner grabs it. Touchdown/

Bede makes the PAT.

Findlay 35, TU 13 (4:35).
