October 24, 2009 - Zach Baker
We pick things up with 3 minutes left in the half, Heidelberg leads, 14-3.
Scoring was as follows:
Heidelberg went 61 yards in four plays, its offense wasn't contained at all on the first drive. Quarterback Andrew Miller was picking B-W apart, and found a wide open Clifton Powell over the middle for a 22-yard touchdown. (13:21)
Heidelberg added to the lead with 3:16 left in the half, when Jesse Hawkins lined up for a 35-yard field goal. But Miller, who was holding, jumped up and looped a pass to Anthony Washington for another TD.
David Cantu hit a short field goal early in the second quarter to make it 14-3.
Heidelberg had another opportunity to score, and had the ball at the B-W 3. But Miller was sacked back at the 20. It set up another Hawkins field goal attempt, but again, Miller jumped up, and threw to the end zone. This time he was intercepted. I'll have to ask Hallett if that was a plan or if Miller improvised. If it was the plan, it makes you wonder about the team's confidence in Hawkins, who before this year was one of the best kickers in the OAC.
-Heidelberg scored again when Miller found Mario Walton in the end zone for another TD. 21-3 HU, 52 seconds left.
Aaron Hurd, a Columbian graduate, just made his first catch for B-W. But we go to the half, 21-3.
HU just played its best half of the year. B-W just can't stop Miller and his offense, with running backs Kenny Sims and Jemar Lewis running well and setting up the passing game.
Baldwin-Wallace drives past midfield, but quarterback Anthony Gardner is hit and coughs up the ball.Heidelberg linebacker Dewayne Lindsey grabs it and returns it 53 yards for a touchdown. 28-3. (12:19).
- Baldwin-Wallace responds. Tim Miker scores on a fourth-and-1 from the 1, 28-10 (9:49).
-Heidelberg is driving again, as the Yellow Jackets have shown no ability to stop Heidelberg's no-huddle offense. Lewis and Sims are eating up the B-W front line, and Miller is finding different open receivers almost every time he passes the ball.
Miller stays red-hot, throwing a fade route to Preston in the right corner of the end zone. The 6-foot-4 Preston didn't even have to jump against 6-0 defender Matt Brown. (4:50) 35-10.
-Gardner makes his first long pass of the game, hitting Devon Jennings down the sideline for a 32-yard completion. It sets up a play where Gardner rolls right, finds a wild open John Stock on the left side of the end zone. 35-17, HU. (1:43)
Just don't see B-W having enough time to make a comeback, especially since the Princes have been answering all day.
Heidelberg drives to the B-W 28, but is stopped on downs. We enter the fourth quarter, with HU still leading by 18. The Jackets get the ball back, but Gardner throws long for Jennings, but HU's Tony Gordon picks him off. (12:25).
Kenny Sims just ate up the B-W defense, breaking through the first wave and finding a burst for a 29-yard touchdown. B-W just can't stop HU today. Hawkins misses the extra point, but it's 41-17 (10:14).
-Baldwin Wallace makes it a little closer, as Gardner finds Anthony Fairhurst for a 10-yard TD. The extra point misses, so its 41-23, 8:11.
HU goes 3-and-out, which I believe is for the second time all day. (6:35).
B-W gets the ball around midfield, and uses a hurry up. Things *could* get interesting here if B-W gets a quick TD.
Gardner uses a 4-yard quarterback keeper to score, making it 41-29. B-W goes for two, but Gardner's pass fails. With 5:12 remainsing, Heidelberg needs a drive, because the Yellow Jackets have shown an ability to score quickly. Never say never.
-Fran Cavotta recovers an onside kick. HU starts at the B-W 40. Lewis runs 10 yards. Huge play.
Facing fourth and 5 at 25. A first down should seal it. Miller hits White, but he gets laid out and drops the ball. B-W takes over, has one timeout and 2:54 to go. HU.
B-W, behind Gardner's stellar play, make it really interesting. Jennings uses his legs to make it close to the end zone, then finds Jennings for a TD. It's 41-35.
White knocks the onside kick out of bounds. They call a false start on B-W, then an unsportsman like penalty on HU's coaching staff. Re-kick.
Heidelberg again knocks it out of bounds. game over. 41-36.
