Heidelberg women v. Otterbein

December 2, 2009 - Zach Baker

-With 16:22 to go, Heidelberg leads 5-0. The Student Princes execution hasn't been great on offense (they've turned it over four times), but the Cardinals have been far worse. Shea McCoy's jumper with 15:56 left breaks the drought.

=Stacey Barker's 3 at the 14-minute mark gives HU an 8-3 lead. Heidelberg's defense is playing well, and the Princes are limiting the Cardinals to just one shot down the floor. Jordan Ickes' jumper makes it 10-3 (13:09)

Ickes drains a 3, it's 13-3. Otterbein takes timeout after 3 points in almost eight minutes.

The Cardinals are warming up, buts still trail, 17-12 at the 9:47 mark. Heidelberg is getting good looks, but not hitting all of them, which has allowed Otterbein to get closer.

Jenny Miller is heating up. Three-straight jumpers from the HU junior push Heidelberg's lead to 23-13. Miller has nine points. (6:14)

Neither team is shooting well, from the field or the foul line. With 1:59 to go, Heidelberg has a 23-17 lead --make it 23-20 after a right corner 3 from Otterbein's Kristi Kotterman, who like HU's Betsy Shrider is a Riverdale graduate.

-Stacey Richard's basket breaks a 5-minute HU scoring drought, but a 3 on the other end ties it at 25 with less than a minute left.

It's 27-27 at the half. Otterbein closes half on 14-4 run.

Otterbein shot a frigid 26.2 percent in the first half, made 2 of 9 free throws, and is still tied at halftime. McCoy has 10 points, while Karli Volkmer has eight rebounds, five offensive

Why is it tied? Otterbein is outrebounding the Student Princes, 32-23, and has 17 offensive boards to HU's 5. HU also has turned the ball over 11 times.

 - McCoy steals on back-to-back possessions, leading to four Otterbein points. With 15 minutes left,  the teams are tied at 35. Miller has 13 points for HU.

- Otterbein is clinging to a 46-45 lead after Miller connects on a pair of free throws to bump her point total to 19. (10:16) At last check, Heidelberg men are in a similar struggle, leading the Cardinals, 48-47, with 14 minutes left in Westerville.

Stacey Richard's left-wing 3 gives HU a brief 48-46 lead, but another McCoy steal sets up a layup, and Otterbein reclaims the lead, 50-48. Moments later, Otterbein's Rachel Snedegar scores a layup to move the lead to 4 (8:09)

Offensive rebounding is really sustaining Otterbein on a night of poor shooting. Natalie Conkle makes a pair of free throws, Cardinals lead, 56-52 (6:19).

Score is the same at 5:16. Heidelberg is struggling to make baskets as well, and that's a big issue when you get just one look each possession.

McConkey's layup at the 2:40 mark makes it 60-55 Otterbein. Just as I'm about to write it's looking bad for HU, Barker hits her third trey, and it's 60-58 at the 2:32 mark. Timeout, Heidelberg.

Miller's layup ties it up, then a steal by Shrider sets up a 3-point play opportunity by Lyndsey DaVault. She connects with 1:07 left. 63-60, HU, Then Otterbein turns it over with 53 seconds left. The opportunity for the win is here.

Kotterman's steal and quick layup make it 63-62 'Berg with 20 seconds left. Timeout, Otterbein.

Barker is fouled, two free throws coming. She cans the first. Second is perfect. 65-62. 17.2 left.

I'm thinking Otterbein will go for a 3 here, rather than rush a 3. Can't get a 3 off, settles for a 2 with, 5 left.

HU wins.
