Straight No Chaser
December 11, 2009 - Al Stephenson
I'm back from baseball's winter meetings that were held this week in Indianapolis. I went there along with my daughter. She was looking for a job and I was there to offer moral support. Over the next few days I will share with you some of the highlights of our experience.
For now though, I would like to tell you about something that we watched on TV one evening in our motel room. I was watching NFL action when during a commercial I found myself doing the "guy" thing as in flipping channels with the remote.
I landed on a PBS station that was running a fundraiser featuring a group called Straight No Chaser. The singing mesmerized both my daughter and myself. The football game was forgotten.
Straight No Chaser is an acapella men's group that consists of former Indiana University students. They put a video on YouTube as they were planning a reunion on campus. Little did they know that people would watch the video over and over. One person who saw it and was suitably impressed was from a record company. The group was flown to Los Angeles and an album was recorded.
They now tour the country sharing an amazing harmony and a number of humorous dance routines. I had never heard of the group until this week but I have become a fan. Get on YouTube and listen to their renditions of Twelve Days of Christmas, Carol of the Bells and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. I'm guessing that you too will become a fan.
The view from my seat (listening to them again and again) would suggest that the Ritz Theatre should look into booking this group. They would be very well received in Tiffin.
