Denison-Heidelberg women updates
January 2, 2010 - Zach Baker
Thanks to some computer issues, we pick things up a tad late here. Heidelberg leads Denison -- the school Steve Carell attended -- 24-18 with 5:45 to go in the first half.
Jenny Miller, as usual, is pacing Heidelberg with 11 points. HU came into this game 3-8, but undefeated at Seiberling Gymnasium.
Heidelberg's gone cold and the game has completely turned. Denison leads, 32-27, having scored 10 straight points. Right now Denison is playing with confidence, and it looks completely different than it did five minutes ago.
-With less than a minute left, the Big Red leads, 35-30. HU is really struggling at this point just holding onto the ball. Each team has to have more than 10 turnovers so far.
Going into the half. Heidelberg trails, 38-32. Miller leads the Student Princes with 13 points.
- At the 15:20 mark of the second half, Denison has a 49-39 lead. Heidelberg's offense still is struggling, but Miller and Betsy Shrider keep getting offensive boards, so that's a positive. Shrider's consistent rebounding has been one of the bright spots so far this season.
Heidelberg SID Morgan Hawley informs me Miller has just reached a double-double. More impressive is that 9 of Miller's boards are offensive. But Heidelberg still trails 53-43. Miller has17 points, but it can't be Show. (11:14).
Jenny Miller's jumper makes it 58-48 with 8:22 left. Denison is outrebounded and isn't getting to the line much. But its shooting, led by Shaina Kaiser's 11 points, has given it the edge.
By the way, Denison is 9-1, so it's not like HU is playing a poor team. Heidelberg is shooting 27 percent, Big Red 46 percent. That is the difference. Also, HU has turned the ball over 18 times to Denison's 11.
-Denison leads, 63-52 with 3:44 left. Heidelberg is running out of time. The Student Princes have rebounded well, played solid defense and have played tough. But you have to make shots. Denison has done that, that's why it leads.
-Denison leads 63-55 with two minutes left. Heidelber needs a stop and gets it. Miller tries to find Shrider under the basket, but players collide and go down, and the ball is grabbed by Denison. Looks like the end.
