ONU women at Heidelberg
January 30, 2010 - Zach Baker
With 16:37 left in the first half, it's 5-0 ONU. Heidelberg has come out as cold as the weather outside. And it's paricularly frigid in Northwest Ohio.
Alyssa Esposito finally breaks up the drought with a right corner 3, and another 3 by Stacey Barker makes it a 7-6 game.
Ohio Northern answers with 7 straight point, and leads Heidelberg, 14-6 at the 11:54 mark. Heidelberg hasn't made a two-pointer yet.
-Heidelberg trails, 19-13 at the 7:54 mark. Not one Heidelberg basket-- not one -- has come from the paint.
With 5:43 left in the first half, Ohio Northern leads, 23-13. Heidelberg can't score inside --it hasn't, sctually. It's now 27-13 at the 5:10 mark. Heidelberg coach Marcie Alberts calls time.
Finally, Jenny Miller banks one in at the 4:07 mark, and Heidelberg has its first inside points. It's 31-22 ONU, 1:18 left.
It's 33-23 at the break. Could have been closer. Barker was fouled on a shot at the buzzer behind the 3 point line, but made just one of three foul shots.
After Betsy Shrider splits a pair of throws, it's 34-27 Ohio Northern, 18:37 left in regulation.
Ohio Northern has scored seven straight oiubnts -- make it 9 after a Kara Dysert basket. Barker answers with a 3, and the Polar Bears lead, 43-30. It's 46-30 after another ONU 3.
Ohio Northern leads, 48-32. Heidelberg's offense has really struggled, as once again it is staying outside. In the first half, Ohio Northern scored only four points in the paint. But the Polar Bears got to the free throw line 11 times. Heidelberg didn't get to the free throw line until there was no time left on the clock. It's 50-32 (12:06).
Ohio Northern has taken over. Moments ago its lead was 25, now it's 59-36 with 7:30 left. ONU's defense has been really strong, but Heidelberg has not been playing well all day, even more so in the second half. It isn't one player for ONU either. Jeanne Bockey has 12 points, Morgan Dumbaugh has 10. The Polar Bears are finding the open player and converting.
Jenny Miller is out. Barker is out. Stacey Richard is out. Alberts is going with a mostly bench team right now, which makes sense with the score 70-44. Not sure if the second half of Wednesday's game carried over, but ONU is playing great, and Heidelberg hasn't matched. 3:09 remains.
