January Sporting Event of Choice
January 31, 2010 - Al Stephenson
As the first month of 2010 comes to a close I thought it would be fun to pick the one sporting event to attend, that is assuming that you could actually attend one. That is - just one. If given the opportunity to attend one event anywhere in the world during the past month - where would you go?
It' s a little late to do this since the events have already taken place, but play along here. In the next couple of days we will do February, where you have to select the event before knowing the outcome.
In January you had a number of choices. Would you choose to go to Hawaii and attend one of the season opening events on the PGA Tour? How about Melbourne and a grand slam tennis final? Serena or Federer, you choose.
An NFL playoff game. Being in the Superdome for the Saints-Vikings matchup would have been cool. Partying on Bourbon Street after the Saints win might have been better. Maybe you prefer NBA hoops or NHL action. Hey, it's your choice, but you can only pick one.
As for me, I think I would choose college football. The Rose Bowl game and the parade would be neat. If the Buckeyes were playing for the national championship then that would be my destination sure.
When OSU took on Miami for the 2002 title a friend of mine booked some motel rooms in Columbus. We went next door to a Damon's for supper, claiming our seats for the game. If you weren't in the restaurant by 4:30 you wouldn't get in on this night.
We ate, we drank, we screamed and at the end of the night we were hugging complete strangers. A guy larger than me wrapped me up in a bear hug and I also happily hugged some women I didn't even know. I hugged my wife too, but she was about 10th in line. We were sitting beside each other the whole night, but when the game ended I was running around high fiving and hugging people. I eventually found her. The atmosphere was electric. It couldn't have been better unless - we would have been at the game!
The view from my seat suggests that for January the event of choice would be the NCAA national championship football game.
