Heidelberg rallies for win in Mideast opener
May 20, 2010 - Zach Baker
Steve Decker's one out single down the left field line drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Heidelberg walked off (I hate that term, but I'll use it anyway) with a 9-8 victory over Adrian.
Heidelberg remains in the winners bracket, and will play either Thomas More or Penn State-Behrend at noon tomorrow. Win that, and the Student Princes will be a win away from the D-III World Series.
The win was anything but easy. After fog suspended the game late last night, Heidelberg came back to the park this morning with a 4-1 lead in the third inning. Starter Ethan Holt also returned, but was chased from the game in the fifth. Andy Lowe came in, but Heidelberg's defense faltered. Adrian took an 8-5 lead in the eighth after five HU errors.
Four outs from defeat, Heidelberg loaded the bases and Alex Monroe came up, ripping a game-tying double to center.
Lowe pitched a scoreless ninth, setting up Decker's game-winning hit.
