Beware OSU Faithful
October 12, 2010 - Al Stephenson
Saturday was a great day to be a Buckeye fan. Not only did they look pretty good in handling a so-so Indiana team, they saw #1 Alabama get beat. Add to that a loss from the team up north and, well you understand why the OSU faithful spent a lot of time smiling over the weekend. Dreams of a national championship are dancing in the heads of many Buck supporters and though I consider myself an OSU fan, it is way too soon to even be thinking about a national title.
It is nice to have the top ranking in the AP poll, but that does not guarantee a spot at the top of the BCS rankings, the convoluted procedure used to try to determine the national champ. It helps that the Crimson Tide is no longer undefeated, but there are so many other teams without a loss that too much jubilation over last weekend would be a mistake.
There are a number of hurdles facing the Buckeyes before January and the first one is this Saturday. Going to Camp Randall to face the Badgers on a Saturday evening may well wipe the smiles off our collective faces - seemingly as fast as we put them on. Wisconsin has been a tough game for Ohio State for years, actually before they became the strong program they are today. Playing in Madison, with the bullseye squarely postitioned in the middle of the back, gives the smart fan reason to pause.
If the Bucks can handle the Badgers, the season is still far from over. Other tough opponents loom and I won't even mention what the last two appearances in the national championship tilt looked like. That, we Buckeye fans, would like to forget.
The view from my seat suggests that we will have a better picture of things in a few weeks. Maybe then we can get excited for our chances. One thing is for sure, you cannot win the national title without being in that championship game. Ohio State may get there and they may not. Let's hope so.
If not, I may be in the minority when I say a Boise State - TCU title game would be a nice matchup.
