What's With Vince
November 23, 2010 - Al Stephenson
Strange things tend to happen with professional athletes. There are any number of these jocks that do things that leave us "ordinary" human beings shaking our heads. The latest craziness took place Sunday and it involved Tennessee Titan quarterback Vince Young. Upset that he was not allowed to reenter the game with a thumb injury, he went ballistic and had an angry exchange with head coach Jeff Fisher. Yesterday it was reported that he will need surgery on the thumb and the Titans plan to put him on injured reserve.
So what caused Young to throw his temper tantrum. Could he have been influenced by other athletes? I think that is possible and I'd like to give you some food for thought.
Brett Favre. The Viking waffler shows up when training camp is half over. He tells his head coach what to do instead of the other way around. He's a superstar and he will have his way. Heck, he played a major role in getting Brad Childress fired yesterday. Is it possible that Vince Young was thinking that if Favre can get away with his act then he will show Fisher a thing or two. Just wondering.
Matthew Stafford. The Detroit QB reentered a game last season against Cleveland against doctor's wishes and threw a game winning TD pass to become something of a hero to Lion fans. Was Vince Young just trying to duplicate Stafford's feat and show his teammates how game he is. This is the best possible scenario for Young and would be a good thing had the meltdown not occured after the game.
Randy Moss. He can be a disruption and he is now with Tennessee. Has he already gotten to Vince Young and given the QB some bad advice? You know - something like be your own man, the heck with the coach, the team and any semblance of SANITY. I doubt it, but you never know what Moss will do or say.
One thing you must understand about Vince Young. He is the same guy that went AWOL not that long ago and people feared for his life. I think he has his own issues and he was more than likely not influenced by any of the above. My guess is that he just doesn't think Jeff Fisher has enough respect for him and he wasn't going to take it anymore. One major problem looms for Vince Young. He has just attacked the longest tenured coach in the NFL. Has he gone too far? Only Titan owner Bud Adams can answer that question.
The view from my seat suggests that next season will be interesting in Tennessee. Will Bud Adams choose between his quarterback and long time coach or will Fisher and Young patch things up and move beyond this?
You may not believe this but I'm going to go with the latter. I think they will work things out and you will see both on the field next season. Then again, I have been wrong before!
