TU men v. No. 2 Findlay
December 16, 2010 - Zach Baker
No idea what to expect tonight. Brian Scott, who had a career game in last year's finale, will be coming off the bench.
With 14:23 to go, TU leads, 10-8, despite missing its first four shots from the floor. Spahr has four for TU. Good defense, and TU is pressing on defense.
Been a fair amount of turnovers on both sides, but Findlay leads, 16-15. I have the Dragons for 7 turnovers, UF for six. 9:51 left in first half.
Greg Kahlig, a freshman has erupted into the paint for a layup, the last a three-point play, and Findlay leads, 29-23. Kahlig has 11 points, his career high is 15. 5:11 left.
Spahr just got called for an offensive foul, TU's 10th of the half, and the Dragons are hanging in, but barely at 31-24. The next 4:11 is very crucial. TU can't go down double digits to these guys at the half.
Findlay leads, 38-29 at halftime. I have seen more offensive fouls called on TU tonight than I can ever remember, but the officiating isn't the issue. The issue is that Joe Graessle has just two points and has missed on all his 3s. John Hill said yesterday that everyone had to play well. TU is chilly from the field, but Grassle is 0 of 4 from deep. TU's also just 4 of 7 from the foul line. TU will need Graessle to get going to have a shot.
Graessle still hasn't hit a trey. His last attempt, from the left wing, wasn't even close and Hill pulled him right after it. Knowing John, it's not misses that bother him, it's the shots that don't come from the offense, and the last one didn't. Findlay leads, 46-34, 15:10 remaining.
With 9:45 remaining, TU is staying within striking distance, barely. The only guy who has been consistent on offense is Keenan Barlow, who has 17 points. But the Dragons trail, 61-49. Graessle has been on the bench.
Richard Morrow just had a tomahawk slam, but was whistled for a technical for... I really don't know. But he was. It's 64-53 with 8:34 left.
Back-to-back 3s (one by Graessle), then a layup by Morrow got TU to 69-65. It's 71-67, 4:36 left. TU is in serious foul trouble. Finley has four fouls, Scott has four fouls, Spahr has four fouls. TU is losing the foul battle 23-11. Barlow and Morrow each have three.
Keenan Barlow makes a 3, the Morrow hits a layup, is fouled, and it's a three-point play, TU leads, 73-72 with 3:24 left. It's so loud in here I can't even here the whistle that leads to Nathan Hyde's to free throws that gives the Oilers back the lead. Morrow answers with a jumper, 75-74, 2:39.
Findlay hasn't made a shot in six minutes. It's 78-74, 1:30 left. Barlow is playing out of his mind. Two Spahr free throws answered by a Kahlig jumper. TU leads, 80-76, 1:02 left.
With 49.3 left, it's 80-78, but Finley turns the ball over with 40.6 left. On the cusp of a big upset, TU shows its inexperience for the first time all half.
And, for the second year in a row, we go to overtime. A Scott miss on a 1-and-1 followed by a Finley turnover and a Brad Piehl layup, ties things at 80. TU has an uphill battle because of the foul trouble.
Piehl scores another layup. Finley is fouled must misses the front end of a 1 and 1. Findlay grabs the board then calls time. 4:15 left.
It's 84-80, but TU is really struggling from the floor; you almost get the sense it is out of gas. 3:04 left.
Kyle Kaiola fouls out, Scott to the foul line with TU down, 85-80, 2:45 left.
Hyde takes several steps to score a layup and give Findlay the lead, thenSean Samsel steals the ball from Scott. Scott's forced to foul and fouls out.
Two more free throws and its back to 89-85 with 42 seconds left.
UF has it locked. Couple cruicial mistakes late in regulation cost TU,, it's 93-85 final.
