TU men v. Hillsdale
January 8, 2011 - Zach Baker
TU has started hot, and with 14:50 left in the first half, hold a 13-6 lead. The scoring has been spread out, as no Dragon has more than one basket.
Tiffin leads, 17-12 against the No. 17 Chargers. 8:56 left in the half. Devin Russell, a transfer from Toledo, is in for the Dragons. First time I have seen him. TU in in the 1-and-1s. The Dragons foul shooting hasn't been good lately, and they have already missed the front ends on a pair of bonus shots.
With 4:56 to go in the half, TU is hanging on to a 19-16 edge. Joe Graessle has five points for the Dragons, who haven't done much on offense in the last five minutes. Truthfully, they wouldn't have done anything had Graessle not been fouled on a 3 attempt and made 2 of 3 shots.
Two inside baskets on back-to-back possessions by Brandon Harris, and a jumper from the lft corner by Karl Finley have pushed the Dragons to a 29-21 halftime lead. Brent Eaton has six for Hillsdale. A point of optimism for the Chargers? 7 of 28 from the field, 1 of 8 from 3s. Why is that good for them? Because there's no way they shoot that poorly in the second half.
Graessle has 10 for Tiffin.
First five minutes are crucial, as TU can't allow Hillsdale to dicate things.
And 22 seconds in, Rafael Cuellar scrambles for a rebound and John Hill calls a 30 second timeout. First one of half becomes a full. That's why I am writing this paragraph.
And Keenan Barlow can't inbound the ball, leading to another Hill timeout. I bet John's thrilled.
Hillsdale has four 3s off transition, and it leads 35-34. That's four times the number of treys the Chargers had in the first half. After a Nick Washburn layup, Hillsdale leads, 37-34, having outscored the Dragons 16-5 over the first 5:46 of the second half.
TU is just getting killed on the offensive glass. After a pair of missed foul shots by the Chargers, they get the rebound and push it to out to another open 3. Hillsdale has hit six this half, whoa, make it seven. Eaton just drained one, and it's 50-38 with 10:37 to go.
TU has hung in there, down 55-49. I'm not sure many teams would have been able to withstand the onslaught of 3s that Hillsdale has connected. But TU is down just six, with 4:05 left. If pas games are any indication, the Dragons have them right where they want them.
TU was down five witha bout two minutes to go, but Hillsdale has kept answering. Graessle had an open 3 from the left wing that would have made the deficit three, but he missed. He's been scoreless here in the second half. Finley has done the bulk of the scoring, with 25 points. Brad Guinane just fouled out. John Tharp just had a message for his players: "Can we stop fouling, please?" TU trails, 69-62, with about a minute left.
Hillsdale holds on, wins 75-68.
