Lake Erie vs. Tiffin Men

January 15, 2011 - Zach Baker
We're about halfway through the first half, and Lake Erie leads Tiffin, 15-10. Lake Erie is 4-9, but has yet to win a GLIAC game in six tries. TU's not getting many good looks, and the Storm has been patient on offense. 9:45.

And Lake Erie is just dominating on the offensive boards, getting about four looks at the basket on back-to-back possessions. TU can't win doing that. 19-12, 8:23.

Primary difference here. TU gets three looks inside at the basket and can't finish. Lake Erie gets an easy layup off of that because Tiffin doesn't get back. Joe Graessle answers with a 3, but TU is still down, 24-15, 6:33.

TU trails, 29-18, with 4:26 left in the half. TU had the lead down to seven with the ball, but turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions, which the Storm promptly converted to baskets. The Dragons have been too sloppy on offense.

This has been a retched first half for the Dragons. They have missed on just about every opportunity to cut into the Storm's lead. It's 31-21 with 1:47 left.

Dragons trail at the half, 33-23. Too many turnovers.

Despite its lack of wins in the GLIAC, LEC is no pushover, most of its losses have been close. TU has to find a way to slow Garrick Sims in thhhhhhhe second half. He has six points, eight rebounds.

Alex Davis' 3 pushes the LEC lead to 13, but then TU answers wiith five points, four off turnovers. Key is Rafael Cuellar, who has two stickbacks off misses. 36-28 Lake Erie, 17:22.

Tiffin is employing a press defensively, the same press that has brought them back against almost everyone. It's had an effect. Cuellar just made a shot and was fouled. TU trails, 41-37, with a shot coming. 14:16 remains. I still think TU needs to do a better job of holding onto the ball to win this.

TU actually had a lead, 43-41, after a Brandon Harris layup. They even forced a stop after that, but promptly threw the ball away. Lake Erie has recovered, getting hot from the floor and taking a 51-45 lead with 9:57 to go.

Two things have been killing the Dragons in this game. One is turnovers. The other is Antonio Kidd. Everytime it looks like TU's about to make a push to tie or take the lead, he hits a jumper to give the Storm more space. His 3 from the left corner gave LEC a 56-50 lead. 4:31 remains.

A scott jumper brings the Dragons within 56-52, but then the best the Dragons can get is a Devin Russell jumper. Another pair of missed foul shots, and Graessle fires up a 3 and misses. But Spahr hits a quick layup to bring TU within two .

But then the Storm answers with two baskets, pushing the lead back up to six. Graessle tried a 3 from the left corner just before that and barely hit the rim. His shot selection hasn't been good today. It's 60-54 with 1:37 left.

Tiffin trails 66-63 with 11 seconds left. LEC has the ball.

TU loses, 68-66. Keenan Barlow's steal and desperation shot from just short of halfcourt was off to the left. Travis Spahr was there for the stickback, but it was clearly after the buzzer.
