Heidelberg men v. John Carroll
January 19, 2011 - Zach Baker
Anytime John Carroll comes to town, it's always interesting. Five years ago, it was Pete Moran's jumper in the face of an antagonistic crowd and at the buzzer that lifted JCU to victory. Four years ago, it was the first huge win of the Duane Sheldon era. Three years ago was a Heidelberg blowout, my first clue that HU was going to do big things. Later that year, John Carroll came to Tiffin for the only OAC postseason game at Seiberling in my tenure here. Heidelberg crushed John Carroll and went on to win the tournament. And last year, Mike Moran won his 300th game at Seiberling.
John Carroll leads 19-13 bat the 19:53 mark. Heidelberg appears to be playing a man defense, but too often guys are getting lost and open shots are being made by the Blue Streaks, There have also been too many turnovers, and Heidelberg too often is settling for jump shots when it can just as easily push. (9:51).
With 9:05 to go in the first half, Heidelberg already has turned the ball over 10 times. That's not normal at all. Heidelberg trails, 22-15.
With 6:10 to go in the first half, Heidelberg trails, 33-25. Whatever Heidelberg is doing defensively, it isn't working. John Carroll has had too many open layups and 3's. It was the long ball that killed HU when John Carroll came to town last winter. However, Darion Capers completes a run with a couple foul shots, getting the Straks lead down to four. But then someone blows an assignment and JCU makes an easy layup. The lead is back up to 37-29 with 4:39 left. Make that 37-31.
A left wing trey from Givner ties things at 37, but then Jarod Artman breaks through the HU defense for a layup. That's been a problem -- Heidelberg makes a big basket, then allows an easy one. With 2:26 to go, JCU leads, 41-37.
So after an 8-0 run for Heidelberg ties things, John Carroll scores the next eight points and leads, 45-37 with just under a minute left in the half.
It's 47-37 at the half. Heidelberg's defense didn't do a real good job in those last two minutes.
This is the first team that I've seen that can match up athletically with the Student Princes. Like HU, the Streaks play almost everybody and get contributions from up and down the lineup. It would be a close game, except that Heidelberg has turned the ball over 14 times already.John Carroll also appears to be dominating by working its way into the paint for points. John Carroll leads, 55-43, 16:44 left.
Heidelberg has battled back a bit. Pat Barrett's pair of foul shots make it 62-55 with 13:04 left.
Darion Capers is having the game of his life, beating JCU defenders down the court for a layup that cuts the John Carroll lead to 71-70 with 8:11 left. Heidelberg has D'd it up in the last few minutes. Derrick Flynn made a pair of free throws to put Heidelberg up by a point, but then Corey Shontz answered with layup and Givner turned it over, but then the defense forced a turnover of its own and Flynn hit a jumper. HU forced another stop but then threw the ball away. It's 75-74 JCU with 5:55 left.
-At the 4:06 mark, the game is tied at 78. Givner has 17 points, but it comes with the downside of eight turnovers. Heidelberg has 24.
With 1:30 remaining, John Carroll has a 3-point lead and the ball. Heidelberg hasn't scored on back-to-back possessions. Kyle Tuley missed a pair of free throws on the first one, Givner missed a right wing 3 on the second.
Victor Fortkamp made a straight away 3, cutting JCU's lead to 85-82 with 27 seconds left. HU has made just 1 of its last 4 free throws. John Carroll has the ball out of a Heidelberg timeout.
John Carroll wins, 87-82
