Heidelberg baseball No. 1 in new poll
January 21, 2011 - Zach Baker
Heidelberg's baseball team is ranked No. 1 in the D3baseball.com (I met some of their writers at the D-III World Series last year. Good guys). This is the second poll in the last month that has placed HU first.
In the D3baseball.com poll, Heidelberg received 19 of 25 first-place votes. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper put it first last month. In the D-III.com poll, the voters are coaches, media members and SIDs. Before you ask, I do not vote in any polls. I have never really been asked. Not that I'm asking now.
So where does this leave Heidelberg? I haven't talked to coach Matt Palm yet, but I doubt this changes much. Heidelberg already had a bulls eye on its back after winning the mideast region last year. I can't imagine too much changing prior to Heidelberg's first game, so every team that plays it will want to knock it off the perch.
The conclusion I have come to is that D-III baseball people don't believe, by an large, that there is a more talented team coming into this season.
It's good to be No. 1, yes. Heidelberg lost one starter from their lineup. It brings back some quality pitchers.
But being on top can also be different and tough.
I'm reminded of that Randy Newman song that he wrote for Frank Sinatra. It appeared on Newman's 1970 masterpiece, Sail Away.
"Oh, it's lonely at the top"
