TU-Malone Football

September 1, 2011 - Zach Baker
Tiffin and Malone have each had a pair of possessions, and each have crossed midfield, but neither have scored yet with 6:26 to go in the first quarter. Malone will punt for the first time... and Frank Defour, standing in his end zone, shanks it. TU takesdover on the Malone 25.

After a great run by David McKnight, Tiffin is set up first and goal at the 2.

And with 4:43 to go in the first quarter, James Capello avoids the rush and finds freshman Marcus Beaurem in the corner for a TD. TU leads 7-0.

And on the ensuing kickoff, Malone's Justin McLean finds a seam on the right side and blows through the TU coverage. Special teams trouble has been a problem for the Dragons in recent years. That didn't look good. Game tied at 7, 2:29 left.

TU's driving again. Capello has good footwork and avoided the rush. He jst had Kenneth Jackson wide open for a TD, but appeared to just overshoot him.

A misdirection to receiver Darrion Brown goes for a 20-yard TD run. Great blocking, great speed as Brown hit the sideline and just followed his blockers. 14-7 TU, 8 seconds left in first quarter.

End of first quarter, TU leads, 14-7. Malone facing a second and 9 from its 21.

Daryon Mosely is contained for no gain on the right side, gets turned around and goes left and outruns the Tiffin defense for a 67 yard run to the TU 12. That sets up a Mosley TD a few plays later. But the extra point fails, so the Dragons hang on to a 14-13 lead with 13 minutes left in the half.

TU, penalize for an illegal block in the back on a play that would have given it a first down around midfield, sees the ensuing drive stall and is forced to punt. (10:53)

Malone goes 3-and-out, and will punt from its 17. (10:17)

TU has a big return from Ravelle Sadler negated by a block in the back. Instead of first and 10 at the Malone 10, TU starts at its 41. and TU promptly fumbles the ball, Malone recovers and returns to the TU 39. TU has fumbled a few times tonight; that's the first one that hurts. (9:05)

TU defense, which, apart from one running play, has been very good, forces a punt. TU offense starts at its 10. (7:53)

On a third and six, Capello finds Kenneth Jackson for almost 30 yards to the 21.

TU faces a third and 3 at the Malone 13. 5:14 remains in half.

Seth Pekoe is 2/2 on extra points, and now adds a 30-yard field goal as the Dragons hold a 17-13 lead with 5:05 left in the half. Extra points have been anything but a given in reent years, and field goals were almost out of the question. So there's an improvement.

TU nose tackle Michael Debesay just blew up a running play, setting up a third and 16 from the TU 39.

More pressure, another punt from Malone. TU starts at its 8 (2:07)

Offensive line has been clutch, Capello is just pitching and catching as TU marches down the fied. TU gets to the Malone 27, before a slack loses 10 yards. A toss to McKnight gains 9 yards back, setting up a third and 11. 1:02 left.

Capello has an open man in the end zone, but the pass hangs up just long enough for Malone's Antonio Pavia to come over and sanre it for a pick. Drive over. So, it turns out, is the half. TU leads, 17-13 at the break.

Teams trade turnovers on their first second half possessions -- Capello is intercepted for the second time, this time after a deflection. (12:44)

TU has had some problems wrapping up on defense. It leads to a five-yard TD from Mosley. The Interceptions have been huge, first costing the Dragons points, then giving the Pioneers some. Pioneers lead, 20-17 with 10:22 left in the third.

Dragons go three-and out. Then Malone fumbles and the Dragons get the ball back just short of midfield. 8:40 left in the third.

Another handoff to Brown gets TU inside the Malone 5. An offensive pass interference call on the next play makes it first and goal from the 22.

Penalties cost the Dragons some points. After first and goal from the five, a air of penalties made it third and goal from the 22. A 14-yard run from Capello sets up a 26-yard feid goal from Pekoe to knot things at 20. (3:52 left in third).

Malone fumbles the kickoff and TU recovers at the 25. Two plays later, Capello drops back and loops a pass over Nate Scully's shoulder in the right corner of the end zone. And all of the sudden, TU leads 27-20 with 3:13 left in the third.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Bernard Chevalier goes into the end zone from five yards out, and we're tied at 27. (14:16)

Sitting next to some TU coaches...they're generating noise for the positive and the negative. TU has the ball in Malone territory following a personal foul on the Pioneers, but now faces a thiird and five. A completion makes it fourth and one. Guessing TU goes from the 39. A handoff. TU thinks it got it. Looks close. It did, after Malone ran off the field for some reason. Weird. (12:31). Malone wasn't ready, the burns its second timeout.

TU turns it over on downs. Malone has it at the 28--its own. 10:13 left.

The teams exchange punts. Pioneers start ay their 26 with 5:49 left in regulation.
