TU football vs. Ashland
October 8, 2011 - Zach Baker
About 2 1/2 minutes before kickoff. James Capello, Tiffin's quarterback, is dressed for play, so we'll see. Beautiful day, Homecoming, Hall of Fame...TU in search of first win.
Capello is starting, but about a minute into the game, he's intercepted by Matt Stoinoff, who returns it for an Ashland touchdown. Capello, holding his ribs, is replaced on the next drive by Dan Pitts. 7-0 Ashland.
Brendton Williams receives the kickoff at the six, as it's going out of bounds. There are bad omens, and then there's this. Pitts and TU's offense goes three and out.
Ravelle Sandler takes the ball away from an Ashland receiver. at the TU 5, and the Dragons are rolling on offense. Pitts, who likes to float his passes, has made three completions and has moved TU into Eagle territory.
TU is forced to punt, and Ashland goes about 85 yards in three plays, as Taylor Housewright hits a wide open Anthon Capasso over the middle. He zigs and zags past Ashland defenders on his way to the end zone. 59 yards, 14-0 Ashland, 6:11 left in first quarter.
-Brendton Williams returns the kickoff to the TU 46., but Pitts gets picked on the next play. Pitts' ball is accurate, but he's not a slinger, more of a floater, which allows defenders to get to receivers.
A few minutes later, Housewright, who hasn't thrown much in the past two games, finds a wide open Eric Thompkins in the end zone for a 22-yard strike. It's 21-0 Eagles, 3:03 left in first quarter.
21-0 Eagles after one quarter, TU driving.
Ashland's Jordan McCune runs in another touchdown. It's 28-0 with 8:46 left in the half.
-Donnie Dottei intercepts Pitts' pass, and it's returned to the TU 1. McCune scores on the next play. 35-0 Eagles, 8:26 left in half.
It's now 42-0. Ouch. 2:04 left in the half.
Mercifully, the half's over. 42-0 Ashland.
With 12:49 left to play, it's 63-6 Ashland. Brendton Williams caught at TD pass in the third quarter for the Dragons' only score thus far.
