TU men v. ODU
January 5, 2012 - Zach Baker
For the second game in a row, the Dragons are not shooting well, turning the ball over, and allow transition baskets in the early part of the game. They trail 10-2 at the 14:56 mark. Tiffin has done almost nothing right. Turnovers, bad shots, bad offense. Five points in the first eight minutes, and it is getting killed on the offensive glass. 20-11 ODU, 9:30 left.
Tiffin made a run, getting the lead down to three. But the Dragons missed a couple and-one opportunities, and the Panthers turned those into points. With 4:19 left, TU trails, 34-23.
Dragons trail, 38-31 at half. The Panthers have 13 offensive rebounds, and are winning the overall boards 30-20.
This is how it's gone for the Dragons tonight. After knocking their deficit down to 43-41, Karl Finley makes a beautiful move to bank in a shot to tie the game...and then ODU's Darrien Douglas shoots a 3 from the left wing, gets fouled an converts the free throw. Douglas, a Willard grad, has 11 as the Panthers lead 42-48 with 12:18 left.
And finally, the Dragons have the lead. Spahr is playing outstanding, he has 15 points, and a 3 from Finley broke a short-lived tie with a trey from the right side. 55-52 Dragons, 11:03 left. And a steal and another Finley trey. Say this for the Dragons. When Finley and Graessle get going, it seems like they can shoot from the other side of the gym and make. Very similar to Saturday's game against Purdue Calumet, where TU used steals and makes in about a 15 second period to turn the game around. Don't expect ODU to fold though. TU leads, 58-52, 9:57 left.
What was that I said about Karl getting going? He has 29 and TU leads, 73-66 with 3:00 left.
With 1:40 left, TU leads, 75-69. But TU will be in the bonus on the next foul. And there it is. Graessle makes the first. The second misses. After a Douglas jumper, Barlow goes to the line in a five point game and makes the first. The second goes. Huge. After an ODU miss, Barlow is fouled again with a chance to perhaps ice this. He makes them both. 80-71, 41 seconds left and I think TU is in the clear.
