Ashland at TU women
January 12, 2012 - Zach Baker
Hard to remember a more important home game for Tiffin than this one. The next two games will go a long way in deciding if the Dragons can win the GLIAC South. Tiffin is 6-2, Ashland is unbeaten in league. Mandy Jaeb has four points, but TU trails, 7-6. Ashland has scored some offensive rebounds and has used effective ball movement to hold its lead with 14:47 left in the half.
Three fouls have been calle in the first nine minutes, and the game is progressing at a quick pace. Jaeb hit a key trey and Karli Mast followed with a steal and layup. giving Tiffin a 16-15 lead at the 8:47 mark. Jaeb has seven. Ashland's Kari Daugherty has six. Jess Harris had a few short-range shots, and TU leads, 29-26 with 3:54 left. Daugherty has hit a couple of big 3s, for a while it seemed like she was answering every TU shot with one. She has 10.
Jaeb has 12, and TU has opened a small cushion, 38-30 at the half. Stephanie Kelly has five points off the bench. There were some minor snags, but I'd imagine coach Pam Oswald is pleased with the first half. Ashland shot about 39 percent in first half. Daugherty has 13 points, five rebounds for the Eagles.
About 2 1/2 minutes in, TU's lead is up to 45-35. The lead was a big as 13 before a Jena Stutzman trey. It was Stutzman's first points.
Ashland is making a comeback, cutting the lead to 47-40 and has two foul shots coming. (14:59).
Ashland has cut the lead to 51-48 and has the ball. The lead was one moments ago. Ashland is starting to control the boards, it has four offensive rebounds already this half.
TU leads 55-53, but a foul on the other end will send Ashland to the line with a chance to tie it. 9:44 remains. Tiffin already has been called for 8 fouls, Ashland 3.
With 4:47 left, TU still hasn't coughed up the lead, even though Ashland has had several opportunities to take it. Dragons lead, 62-61, with possession. Jaeb has 20, but has been quiet since she went on a burst early in second half.
TU has gone a little cold offensively, giving Ashland the opening it needed for a 67-64 lead. 1:36 remains. TU hasn't scored in aa minute--until a Mast jumper cuts it to one. Stutzman has 13, and has hit some big jumpers on back-to-back possessions. It's now 69-66 with about 27 seconds left. TU ball.
Mast's left wing 3 ties it with 19.5 left. TU takes time with 2 seconds left after making a stop. Mast pumped her first after the tying trey.
Well drawn up. Focke inbounded to Johnson, who had a good (if long) trey attempt at buzzer. It missed to left. So we go to overtime.
TU leads, 73-69, 1:54 left.
TU trails, 75-77 with five seconds left and one more foul shot coming. Jess Harris' jumper missed. It's 77-75, 2 seconds left. Seen this before.
Jaeb's 3-pointer at buzzer misses, Ashland wins.
