Darryle Miller dies

Mon, August 16, 2010 @ 2:34AM  In some very sad news, the A-T today reported the shooting death of former Tiffin University basketball player Darryle Miller, which occurred early Sunday morning. Miller played two seasons with the Dragons, each under former coach Rodney Martin. Like most of TU's roster, he did not stay when the program was taken over by John Hill last season. I do recall Miller having some good games with the Dragons. He was a 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard. I remember writing several times about Martin's teams that they had guys with talent, but not the experience go up against the tough teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference. Miller was just a sophomore in Martin's last season. The teams struggled, and after Martin resigned, only four players — Bryan Scott, Mohammed Fall, Rafael Cuellar and Ryan Webb, stayed with the program.  This has to be very difficult news for all of TU, but especially for Miller's former teammates.

Getting there

Sat, August 21, 2010 @ 5:33PM This morning I did my first gardening in over four weeks, and although it was a little project, it felt so good to get my hands in the dirt again. These lily-white hands and finger nails do not belong to me! I took a garbage bag outside on the porch, and threw away two or three annuals that were past their best, and pruned the plumbago in hopes it will revive a bit. And now an afternoon shower is helping. The grass across the street seems to be greening up already!   Yesterday was a red letter day. Some of my friends from the Seneca County Park District picked me up and took me out for lunch....the first time I left the house since I had my stitches out two weeks ago. I cannot put weight on my right foot, but can hop and hobble with a walker for a short distance. Now I really understand the emphasis on handicapped accessibility.

New Riegel at state

Fri, June 4, 2010 @ 1:06PM Top of the third from Firestone Stadium in Akron, S-F up with no score. Mathias has retired all six batters for NR, and the Blue Jackets have stranded a runner at second with two outs in each of the their first two at-bats.   Through 3 innings, still no hits and no score S-F gets a run in the top of the fourth, Amistadi with a 1-out single through left side, to second on a delayed steal with two outs, and Metzger bounces an RBI single up the middle   Right after a Strasburg fan yells "They can't hit you Carly, they can't hit you," Paula Kelbley smacks a solo homer to left field to tie the game. Clark then throws 2 balls to Mathias and S-F makes a pitching change, bringing in Gerber.

September Choice

Wed, September 1, 2010 @ 8:19PM As I have done all year, it is time to choose what sporting event you would attend in the month of September if given the opportunity.  This month I will work backwards.  I will tell you where I'm going - and then explain why I'm not choosing something else. If given the opportunity in September, I would attend the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows, New York.  I am not a tennis player nor a big fan of the game.  I would like to see the best in the world play the game however.  I would have loved to have gone to Wimbledon, or the French Open, or to Austrailia to see one of the majors, but other events took precedence for me. That is part of the reason why I'm choosing the U.S. Open as my tennis venue.  Seeing Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, the Williams sisters or Maria Sharapova (too bad Anna Kournikova doesn't play anymore - yes, I'm one that found her very attractive) would be a lot of fun.

Wanted: A month of weekends

Tue, August 31, 2010 @ 11:14AM This tidbit popped up in my e-mail Friday: AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT *AUGUST 2010*. This August has 5 Sundays, 5 Mondays, 5 Tuesdays, all in one month. It happens once in 823 years. !I'll probably miss the next one.) Trouble is, it's not true. May 2011 begins on a Sunday and hence has five Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. The next time August has five Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays? 2021. Better yet, August 2014 will have five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays! Last May also had five Sundays and five Saturdays, but that was followed by five Mondays. What I like are the months that have the extra payda.
