Elmwood at the Springs opens sleep disorder lab

GREEN SPRINGS - Although millions of Americans suffer from some sleep disorder, many remain untreated.

Elmwood Healthcare Center at The Springs has opened Feathers Sleep Center in the Outpatient Services Department on its west campus to help diagnose sleep disorders.

Snoring is not the only problem causing people to lose sleep. Waking with a headache or feeling drowsy also can be problems. Interrupted breathing and lack of sleep may lead to poor concentration, memory difficulties and depression.

Sleep lab clients can bring a favorite pillow or use one provided to spend a night at the clinic, which features two private rooms with queen size beds. Televisions and other amenities are included in each room.

Individuals interested in having a sleep study done must obtain a physician's prescription.

Studies usually take place during the evening, so normal sleep patterns are reproduced. However, Elmwood, 401 N. Broadway St., Green Springs, will conduct studies during the day to accommodate people's schedules. Sleep studies are completed on an outpatient basis and are covered by most insurance.

The most studied sleep disorder is sleep apnea, when breathing is disrupted during sleep several times during the night causing the person to wake frequently. Blood-oxygen levels usually are affected. This strains the heart and cardiovascular system.

Untreated, sleep apnea can cause health problems including stroke, hypertension and heart failure.
