Field Crops Day to focus on wet spring

July 13, 2011
The Advertiser-Tribune

HOYTVILLE - Late planting and other impacts from this year's wet spring will highlight this year's Field Crops Day 9-11:30 a.m. July 28 at the Northwest Agricultural Research Station in Hoytville.

The free program is sponsored by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and Ohio State University Extension - the research and outreach arms, respectively, of Ohio State's College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

"For this year's Field Crops Day we made an effort to include speakers to focus on challenges producers may face due to the late planting, catering their talks to prepare our clientele for issues that may arise," said Matt Davis, research station manager. "We will also address water management systems to deal with both too much or too little water and will share data on a multi-year study of spray nozzles and their different ability to penetrate the crop canopy."

The program, presented by Ohio State specialists, includes the topics of "Insect Issues for Late Planted Crops," by Andy Michel, Department of Entomology, OARDC and OSU Extension; "The Impact of Late Corn Planting on Agronomic Performance," by Peter Thomison, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OARDC and OSU Extension; "Water Management and Challenges for Agriculture and Water Resources," by Larry Brown, Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, OARDC and OSU Extension; and "Getting the Best Coverage and Deposition from Your Sprayer," by Erdal Ozkan, Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, OARDC and OSU Extension.

The research station is in Wood County at 4240 Range Line Road, about a half mile northeast of Hoytville at Range Line and Oil Center roads.
