Area litter crews clean nearly 4 tons of trash in ’11

March 23, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

FREMONT - Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District and litter crews from juvenile courts cleaned 7,970 pounds - almost 4 tons - of trash in 2011, according to OSS statistics.

Last year, 1,290 miles of roadways were cleaned, resulting in 871 bags of trash weighing more than 4,800 pounds, said an OSS news release.

In addition, the crew makes an effort to separate items that may be recycled. Last year, 709 bags weighing 3,170 pounds of recyclable items such as aluminum and glass were collected.

Supervised by court employees, crews work with OSS, township officials and county road maintenance crews to plan a schedule to avoid paving, construction and mowing.

In past years, the program has operated April through October but because of the mild weather this season, crews already have started cleaning.
