FREMONT - Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Joint Solid Waste District is sponsoring a household hazardous waste collection May 5.
Only residents in the three counties may participate, which includes all of Fostoria and Bellevue. People with last names beginning with A-M are asked to drop off items 9-10:30 a.m., and last names with N-Z 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Seneca County Agriculture Service Center rear parking lot, 3140 S. SR 100.
Residents are asked not to smoke and to stay in their vehicles while they are being unloaded.
Items to be collected in cans no larger than 5 gallons include latex and oil-based paint, primers, and spray-paint aerosol cans; household pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides; varnish, polyurethane and shellacs, wood stains, primers and strippers, paint thinner, turpentine, kerosene and lighter fluid; household cleaners; hand-held propane cylinders; household batteries, fluorescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs; cooking oil; automotive fluids including antifreeze and motor oil; mercury and thermostats.
No construction materials, such as shingles or asbestos-containing materials, can be collected, and no materials from businesses.
As a part of the collection, residents may trade mercury fever thermometer for digital thermometers while the district's supply lasts. Mercury thermometers should be placed in a double Ziploc plastic bag.
