Conservation Day coming to 'Berg

Seneca Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a Backyard Conservation Day 9 a.m.-noon June 16 at Fireside Cafe Patio at Heidelberg University.

Topics to be covered are water conservation, wildlife, lawn care and energy conservation for homeowners.

FELC planning Farm Fest June 16

Franciscan Earth Literacy Center is planning a Farm Fest 9 a.m.-noon June 16 on the St. Francis grounds.

People are encouraged to tour the passive solar/straw bale house and the FELC headquarters, as well as see a wind turbine, walk the fields, enjoy treats prepared by a chef from the farm's chemical-free produce and take a wagon ride. There will be activities for children.

Controlled hunts apps due July 31

COLUMBUS - Hunters wanting to participate in Ohio's fall controlled deer and waterfowl hunts have until July 31 to submit permit applications for a random drawing.

All applicants must possess a current hunting license and meet age requirements.

To apply, complete the application process online at www.wildohio.com or call (800) 945-5433 and request a mail-in application. There is a non-refundable application fee of $3 per hunt.

Hunters will be randomly drawn from submitted applications. Those drawn will be notified and provided additional hunt information by U.S. mail and email.

Boating photos sought by ODNR

COLUMBUS - Photography enthusiasts willing to capture the essence of recreational boating can submit photos to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft. Selected images will be highlighted in an online photo gallery.

The "Enjoying the Water" photo challenge is open to photographers ages 18 and older. Photos must be taken between Dec. 1, 2011, and Nov. 30 on Ohio waters. They can be submitted to the Division of Watercraft through Nov. 30.

Submissions must be the original work of the photographer and can portray any type of legal and safe boating-related activity on any kind of registered watercraft. They can incorporate shoreline landscapes, wildlife or people enjoying a variety of boating activities. Black and white and color photographs will be accepted.
