Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., is right: an independent counsel should be named to investigate national security leaks that may have come from the White House.
Information on several classified activities, ranging from anti-terrorism missions to Iran's nuclear program, has leaked to the news media during the past several months. There have been allegations the White House is responsible, in a move intended to boost President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.
The Justice Department is investigating. But, as Lieberman points out, that brings up an appearance of conflict of interest. A special counsel should be named for the probe.
