FREMONT The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center has planned two special summer events this month.
Sunday, the center's 1860s-style base ball club, the Spiegel Grove Squires, have a home match at 2 p.m. Their opponents for this free event are the Wyandotte Ghost Riders.
The sport of base ball just was reaching the level of a "national pastime" in the late 1800s. About two dozen male volunteers make up the Spiegel Grove Squires. They wear vintage-style uniforms, use 19th-century-style equipment and observe regulations as no cursing, no base stealing and no calling other players by their first names.
July 28, Spiegel Grove is the venue for GroveFest. It combines a car show, sports, entertainment and auction. Admission to everything except the fundraising auction is free.
"Croquet at the Grove" runs 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Hayes Presidential Croquet Club demonstrates the lawn sport and also provides opportunities for the public to "take a swing."
The preliminaries of Fremont's Got Talent competition is set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. In its third year, the contest showcases talent from the Sandusky County area. GroveFest attendees can watch the talent contest and help choose the People's Choice winner.
The car show is to include about 40 vehicles and a feature display of Indian motorcycles noon-4 p.m.
The center's Bid at the Grove auction is to take place 6-10 p.m. Call (419) 332-2081, ext. 226 for information.
