Support poor without force

August 22, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

In his rebuttal of Don and Jean Kin's letter, Joshua Hill seems to be saying that cutting government support of the poor and elderly is somehow morally wrong and/or anti-Christian. He also implies that his view is in line with the teachings of Jesus.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, individuals themselves are instructed to care and provide for the poor, sick and elderly. Nowhere is there instruction to take money by force from one person to help some other person, not even by governments. In fact, the opposite is plainly stated as thou shalt not steal.

No matter how noble the end, it does not justify the immoral means.

Sincerely,

Stephen Faber,

Tiffin
