FOSTORIA - Lakota's Makayla Dull took the first step towards making a return trip to the state golf tournament, advancing out of Tuesday's Division II sectional tournament at Indianbrook in Fostoria. However, she won't be the only area representative teeing it up at next week's district tournament. Mohawk's Katelynn Kinley joined Dull as individual qualifiers, moving on to the district tournament Monday at Sycamore Springs.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advanced out of the sectional. Sandusky Perkins took the team title shooting a 344. Bellevue (400) and Huron (426) joined the Pirates as team qualifiers.
Dull shot a 77 to take the top individual spot. She has the second low-round of the day behind only Maddy Mullins of Perkins who took medalist honors with a 72.
"She started real strong. She started on the front nine; she had two straight pars then a pair of birdies. She putted very well on the front, ended up going out in 36," Lakota coach Chad Garberich said. "Back nine, she had a couple hiccups, made a triple bogey on 12, but surrounded it with a couple birdies. Then had a couple bogeys coming in."
Dull finished 10th as a freshman at last year's state meet, but is recovering from a knee in jury suffered during basketball season.
"Right now she's probably 90-95 percent as far as flexibility with the leg," Garberich said. "For what she needs to do, she's all the way there as far as her swing. She's been putting all season long absolutely amazing. She had seven-straight 1-putts at one point with one she put in off the fringe."
Kendra Gast of Margaretta fired a 95 and Kinley was right behind with a 96, ensuring the Warriors, who finished the regular season 10-0, will have a representative in the district meet.
"She did real well. She was not happy with the way she played, but it was good enough to get her out today," Mohawk coach Greg Coffman said. "Scores were a little higher for whatever reason today than we expected. She wasn't happy with the way she played, but she did well and recovered well and made it out."
Mohawk took fifth overall shooting a 449. Chelsea Clinger shot a 103, Brooke Weininger shot a 123 and Michaela Cook shot a 127.
This was the first year the Warriors fielded a varsity girls team.
"I just really couldn't be more proud of them," Coffman said. "It's our first year having a girls varsity team, I was tickled they gave us that opportunity to have a varsity team. Our record in duals, the girls were proud. ... "It makes me most proud how much they've improved over the year. We don't have a senior on our team, so we're all excited about what we can do next year."
Also from area teams, Columbian's Katie Bogner shot a 100 and Mercedes Runion shot a 144.
Seneca East's Shelby Bumb shot a 135.
Shealy leads Buckettes at sectionls
CRESTLINE - The tournament trail for Buckeye Central ended Tuesday at Valley View. The Buckettes finished sixth, shooting a 506. Edison (348), New London (422) and Shelby (439) were the top three teams qualifying to next week's district tournament.
Buckeye Central was led by Lydia Shealy with a 116. Also, Ashley Stander shot a 127, Megan McGinnis shot a 128, Celcelia Stover shot a 135 and Maddie Fagan shot a 137.
