UPPER SANDUSKY - For the second-straight season, Lakota's Makayla Dull is headed to the state tournament.
The sophomore shot an 81 Monday at the districts at Sycamore Springs, giving her the fourth-best score overall and the third-best among individuals whose teams did not advance.
The top three teams and top three individuals advance to next week's state meet.
Dull shot a 40 on the front, and a 41 on the back to advance.
One other local golfer, Mohawk's Katlynn Kinley, also competed, shooting an 87, but did not advance. Kinley finished with a strong 41 on the back nine.
Sandusky Perkins had the top golfer - Maddy Mullens, who shot a 71 - and the best team. The Pirates finished with a 337, outdistancing Lima Central Catholic (353) and Edison (369). Those teams also advanced.
Three area golfers advance from Galion
GALION - The rules of Monday's Division III sectional at Galion stipulated that the top three teams and the top four individual golfers advanced to Thursday's district tournament at Bowling Green.
Three individual spots all were gobbled up by area golfers.
Calvert's Jeremy Hanna and Seneca East's Nathan Phillips each shot a 78 to punch their tickets for later this week. Hopewell-Loudon's Bryce Gorrell also advanced, shooting an 80.
Crestview's Josh Brooks led everyone with a 70, but Crestview finished with a 308, meaning its entire team moves on. Wynford (334) and St. Paul (336) rounded out the the top three teams.
Calvert coach Bob Williams said Hanna bounced back from what was a tough (for him) first nine.
"What I was proud of is he had a mediocre 41 on his front 9, but held it together and got a 37 on the back nine," Williams said. "The key words there are 'held it together' and he accomplished his goal."
Williams said he's confident about Hanna's play going into Thursday.
"The potential is obvious, but this has been his focus for three or four years," Williams said. "He's really focused on getting this accomplished.
"Jeremy has a strong, solid game," he said. "He just needs to trust his swing on every swing."
Seneca East coach Gary Manasco said Phillips' strength has been his short game, and he excelled at putting Monday.
"He played very well today," Manasco said. "He was hitting the ball well, but I think the biggest point [was] his putting was excellent. He had a number of one-putts today."
Manasco was asked what Phillips needs to do to advance to next week's state meet. Manasco said Phillips can do it, but some things are out of his control, and it may come down to which teams advance, and how many spots are opened by that.
"He's capable of it," Manasco said. "You control your game. There's no defense in golf."
As for Gorrell, the Midland Athletic League Meet medalist played the back nine first, an shot a 37. But H-L coach Bob Maurer said Gorrell struggled a bit on the front nine in finishing with a 43.
"(Gorrell) had some problems there on the back nine," Maurer said. If he puts two good nines to together it will be the key for him.
"I think he needs to break 80 and get into the mid-to high 70s [to advance]."
Hopewell-Loudon shot a 343 as a team, finishing fourth, seven strokes off qualifying as a team. Buckeye Central finished seventh (365), and was led by Eric Heydinger's 84. Calvert (369) finished behind BC, with Mohawk (383) following it.
Mohawk was led by Braydon Dunlap's 89. Seneca East shot a 390 to finish behind the Warriors.
