I am so disgusted with the letter from Linda Hayman. It's important to get some facts out there.
For 95 years, Planned Parenthood has been providing vital services for women's health. These services include life-saving screenings, birth control and, most importantly, education. More than 90 percent of its services are preventive measures that reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and STDs, as well as screening for many forms of cancer. I personally have chosen Planned Parenthood when I moved back to the area and didn't have a local gynecologist for my yearly exam. It is clearly not in operation to kill babies. Ms. Heyman states "Killing babies is never OK, in most all cases." What?
Her next topic goes on to state that God created a man and a woman to populate the earth. My husband and I have chosen not to have children. Since it is not our intention to populate the earth, should we not be allowed to be married? Besides the fact that this country was based on religious freedom and her statements presuppose that everyone must believe in her god, she must be OK with incest. I mean, if Adam and Eve populated the earth as she states, their children would have had to mate, and so on and so on. So incest is acceptable, but gay marriage is not? God didn't create marriage. It is a legal contract. The law is not intended to discriminate, therefore by not allowing consenting adults to enjoy the benefits of marriage we are violating their legal rights based on their genitals.
It saddens me that in 2012 we still have people in our community who care so little about others that they don't believe in accessible health care and equality.
