SYCAMORE - Mohawk Local School District's additional five-year, 1.5-mill permanent improvement levy was rejected by voters Tuesday.
According to unofficial totals, 1,125 voters approved the levy, and 1,882 voters rejected it.
"I am disappointed, but I appreciate the support from the community," Superintendent Ken Ratliff said. "I get it that it was a tough question to ask voters to raise their taxes."
The district cut nearly $400,000 in the 2011 fiscal year and nearly $300,000 in the 2012 fiscal year, Ratliff said.
"We have cut a lot out of the budget and we are just running out of room to cut," he said.
Ratliff said he does not want to have to cut any more programs for the students.
"We are going to have to step back and take a look. On putting it back on the ballot, I will have to take it to the treasurer and the board and discuss it," Ratliff said.
"Right now I will not say whether we will put it back on or not. ... I am just looking for feedback from the voters," he added.
