Florus U. Schalk

Florus U. Schalk, 86, of Tiffin, died at 5:47 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

Florus was born Dec. 31, 1925, in New Riegel to Alphonse and Catherine (Reinhart) Schalk. He married Viola Wurm, Oct. 8, 1955, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, New Washington, and she survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Gerald (Tammy) Schalk and Urban Schalk, both of Tiffin; a son-in-law, Patrick Hoepf of Tiffin; seven grandchildren, Lucy, Anthony and Robert Schalk and Sister Marie Laboure, Maria, Regina and Rebecca Hoepf; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Loren Schalk; three brothers, Simon Schalk of Carey, Raymond Schalk of Findlay and Arthur Schalk of New Riegel; and three sisters, Marie Scherger of New Riegel and Rose Smith and Gervase Craig, both of Tiffin.

He was preceded by his parents; a daughter, Elaine Hoepf; two brothers, George and Bruno Schalk; and three sisters, Rita Wurm, Irene Elchert and Alice Nye.

Florus attended New Riegel High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a quartermaster. He retired in 1990 from National Machinery as an assembler, after 38 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, and American Legion No. 354, New Riegel. Florus was an avid euchre player and he enjoyed gardening.

Family and friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-3113. A wake service will be 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin. The Mass will be concelebrated by the Rev. Joseph Szybka and the Rev. Frank Murd. The rosary will be said 20 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Tiffin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvert Catholic Schools, St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Sisters of St. Francis or to the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, Ann Arbor, Mich. in care of the funeral home.
