ALLENDALE, Mich. - Tiffin University's men's team held Grand Valley State, one of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's strongest teams, to 66 points Thursday night.
Dragons coach John Hill said when you do that, you should win.
The problem was that TU, after taking a 30-24 lead early in the second half, couldn't score. After Joe Graessle's jump shot 27 seconds after the break ended, Tiffin went on a shooting slump, and the Lakers took advantage, going on a 15-0 run that ended on a Graessle foul shot with 8:48 left in regulation. Tiffin didn't score a basket for another two minutes, when Isaiah Twine connected on a jumper. But by then, Grand Valley State had built a 53-32 lead.
GVSU was able to hold off a late TU rally and win, 66-52.
"We just had an inability to score," Hill said.
Graessle finished with 23 points to lead the Dragons (3-4, 1-2), and Eric Roby had nine points to go with six rebounds.
"And then we did have anybody else," Hill said.
Hill said he was pleased with the Dragons' defensive effort, as they held Ryan Majerle (nephew of former NBA star and former Cavalier Dan Majerle) to two 3-pointers and 10 points.
Kristers Zeidaks had 12 points to lead the Lakers (6-1, 3-0).
"Hold a team to 66 you should win," Hill said. "We've got to score 70. They could not figure out our pressure. We just couldn't shoot."
TU women struggle on road
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Tiffin's women's basketball team was unable to generate much offense Thursday night against Grand Valley State.
The Dragons managed just 16 points in the first half, but trailed the equally chilly Lakers by only five at halftime.
In the second half, Grand Valley State got hot. Tiffin stayed cold. The result was a 59-38 win by Grand Valley State.
Tiffin, playing without injured starting guard Karli Mast, shot just 13 of 53 from the field.
"The first game Karli's out, everybody feels like they have to step up," Oswald said. "I just think everybody's trying too hard. It's not a good flow, not a good rhythm."
Briauna Taylor had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who improved to 5-1, 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Tiffin was outscored 38-22 in the second half.
"I just felt we kind of lost that defensive intensity we had the first half, and it carried over," Oswald said. "Then, I don't want to sound like a broken record, but we started getting away from the game plan."
Perhaps the lone bright spot of Tiffin on offense was the play of Mackenzie Storlie off the bench. She scored a team-best 16 points.
TU fell to 5-1, 2-1.
Warriors rout Raiders
KANSAS - Mohawk must've brought its Windex to Lakota as the Warriors cleaned the glass to the tune of a 46-16 edge over the Raiders, part of a 64-21 Midland Athletic League victory for Mohawk.
Kasey Adelsperger's 22 points paced the Raiders. The juniors also collected seven rebounds. Sarah Runion knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points and Jessie Babcock tossed in eight.
Sarah Parker was tops on the glass with eight rebounds and Clara Adelsperger pulled down seven.
Stephanie Miller led Lakota with seven points.
Streaks stop Stockaders
OLD FORT - Fremont St. Joe started out fast and never slowed up, scoring a 44-21 victory over Old Fort in Midland Athletic League play.
The Streaks were led on the night by Be Reardon who tossed in 14 points. Jensen Lejeune and Laura Baez each added 11.
Old Fort was led by Sara Bell with eight points and eight rebounds. Michaela Davidson added six points and Sammy Miller chipped in five.
Rossford rolls past FHS
ROSSFORD - Rossford raced out 26-6 in the first quarter and held Fostoria scoreless in the second Thursday on the way to a 68-24 Northern Buckeye Conference win.
Olivia Valenti and Erica Moore each scored nine points for the Redmen in the loss.
