A man was killed this morning after he was struck by a train near the Clinton Avenue railroad crossing.
According to a release from Tiffin Police Department, CSX reported at 6:13 a.m. an eastbound train had struck a pedestrian in the city limits after crossing the Sandusky River. Officers responded to the area and located the man at the end of Tilden and Railroad streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tiffin Police Chief Fred Stevens said the man has been identified, but his name is not being released until his family has been notified of his death. Stevens said the 55-year-old man is from Tiffin.
Stevens said the incident remains under investigation, and police are reviewing video surveillance from the train. He said it has not yet been determined whether the incident was an accident.
"We haven't ruled anything yet," he said.
According to the release, the location of the accident was not at a road crossing, and rail traffic was stopped in both directions immediately following the incident while the scene was photographed and processed.
