BETTSVILLE - The board of education heard Thursday night some Bettsville students are considering raising money to purchase smoke detectors for every family in the district.

The idea was prompted by the deaths of three Seneca East students in a house fire Nov. 27. A similar fundraising effort is under way in the Seneca East district.

Dean of Students Leigh Ann King told the board the Christmas Aid program, made possible by donations from employee and local church groups, is to make deliveries Wednesday.

In other business, the board:

Approved Alexandria Glanemann as cheerleader adviser and Elaine Leonard as substitute secretary/teacher aide.

Approved Amy Lutz Castellanos as substitute teacher for the remaining school year.

Approved board president Nicholas Baker as president pro tem for the Jan. 10 reorganizational meeting.

Approved a Title I grant of $55,000 for fiscal year 2012-13. The grant provides educational materials and helps pay remedial student costs.

Approved contracts with Bettsville Police Department and Mike Snell Construction.

The next school board meeting is set for 5 p.m. Jan 10.
